Wanted: Leaders to Reimagine Our Response to Sexual Abuse.
Our current system is a failure. We need a better system for stopping sexual abuse.
Sexual harm continues at an epidemic scale, and our methods are failing survivors, families, communities, and society. We still elect or permit unrepentant and unrehabilitated offenders to hold positions of power, including high political office.
Our flawed, reactive response consistently fails to deliver real accountability or justice:
• We tend to blame and shame victims.
• We primarily focus on punishment, neglecting effective rehabilitation or true prevention.
• Our adversarial legal system is all-or-nothing. This often results in an overreaction to extreme cases while simultaneously under-treating and ignoring the "shallow end" —the early, often minimized beginnings of sexual misconduct.
• Civil justice is often limited to cases against "deep pockets," leaving countless survivors without genuine recourse.
• Crucially, we do almost no education, primary, or secondary prevention.
A fundamentally different, more holistic approach is essential.
We are looking for leaders to design, build, and promote a radically different, more effective model for prevention, intervention, rehabilitation, and justice.
If you are a therapist, lawyer, abuse survivor, perpetrator, law enforcement officer, social scientist, educator, journalist, media expert, philanthropist, or any interested human being who is ready to commit to building this alternative system, email me at FixingAbuse-AT-gmail.com.
